COVID After Care

If you’ve recently recovered from COVID-19 you are probably all too familiar with the fact that symptoms and issues may linger long after your body has fought the infection. Many patients are complaining of brain fog, chronic fatigue syndrome, difficulty breathing and heart problems as a result of COVID-19 infection. The team here at Village Primary Care Providers understands the unique needs and care our patients will need to help manage symptoms and improve their health after COVID-19. During this difficult time, we are here to help.

What is a “long hauler”?

Most people will recover from COVID-19 within a couple of weeks; however, there are some people who will struggle with symptoms for months after. These “long hauler” patients are dealing with what we call “post COVID-19 symptoms”, and we understand that these symptoms can be distressing, uncomfortable and can greatly impact quality of life.

What are some symptoms people are dealing with after COVID-19?

Despite recovering from COVID-19, many people are still experiencing shortness of breath particularly with exercise and activity. People who were once able to go for a run or even walk upstairs may find themselves easily winded and exhausted. Everyone’s symptoms are going to be different, but if you are noticing problems lingering after you’ve recovered from COVID-19 then you may be dealing with post COVID-19 symptoms.

What can be done to treat these symptoms?

It’s important to listen to your body at this time and to rest as much as possible. If you find yourself feeling winded or tired, take time to rest or nap. If you’re having trouble falling or staying asleep at night, you may want to talk with our doctors about sleep hygiene and ways to improve your sleep at night.

Another common symptom that “long-haulers” are dealing with is fatigue. Some people find it difficult to get out of bed let alone get work done, run errands or even do the same chores they once did around the house. It’s important that you talk openly and honestly with your boss about needing breaks throughout the day to prevent fatigue and exhaustion from impacting your work and causing more stress.

We also know how important exercise is for your health; however, some patients find it difficult to get the exercise they need when they are quickly winded and out of breath. We can work with you to create an exercise regimen that can help ease you back into working out without exacerbating symptoms. Remember that our doctors are also here to provide you with advice and education about ways to manage your symptoms and improve quality of life.

From leg swelling to brain fog, we have worked with many “long-hauler” patients to help improve their health and wellbeing after COVID-19. If you or a loved one is dealing with long-term complications due to COVID-19, know that the team here at Village Primary Care Providers can help.
